ESN Albania Invited to Share Youth Perspective at High-Level IED Conference in Bratislava

Navigating the Geopolitical Storm: Engaging Europe’s Citizens for the Next Decade
On April 24, 2025, ESN Albania had the honor of participating in the IED Conference in Bratislava, Slovakia, titled “Central Europe: Navigating the Geopolitical Storm.” This event brought together thought leaders and citizens from across Europe to discuss how to engage effectively in the coming decade amidst a complex and uncertain global landscape. The conference highlighted the urgent need to address global crises, combat disinformation, and rebuild trust in democratic institutions. Inspired by Edgar Morin’s ‘complex thought,’ participants explored solutions that integrate diverse perspectives, emphasizing the importance of engaged citizens and democratically elected leaders in shaping a better future.
Spotting Fake News and Promoting Media Literacy
Lutjona Lula, representing ESN Albania, shared her insights on combating fake news, a pervasive issue in the digital age. She emphasized the importance of media literacy education in schools to empower young people with the tools to critically evaluate information online. With only 56% of EU citizens possessing basic or above-basic digital skills, and even lower rates in the Western Balkans, prioritizing media literacy is crucial. Youth-led initiatives, in collaboration with fact-checking organizations, can amplify efforts to counter misinformation, demonstrating the power of collective action.
Balancing Freedom and Responsibility in Online Spaces
Lula also addressed the need to balance freedom and responsibility in online spaces. She advocated for policies that protect freedom of speech while addressing online harassment and hate speech. Involving young people in the development of these frameworks ensures fairness and efficacy. In the Western Balkans, barriers to civic and political engagement complicate efforts to balance rights and responsibilities online. When young voices are heard, policies resonate more effectively, fostering a culture of respect and dialogue.
Ethical Use of Technology and Digital Citizenship
Finally, Lula highlighted the importance of ethical guidelines and regulations for technology use. The European Commission’s AI regulations and the Digital Education Action Plan emphasize the need for responsible tech use, transparency, and accountability. In the Western Balkans, AI regulation is still developing, with efforts underway to align with EU directives. Greater investment in digital infrastructure and education is needed to support responsible AI use. Lula stressed that digital citizenship is foundational, calling for educational policies that integrate lessons on online safety, privacy, and responsible behavior.
As we navigate these challenges, it is essential to envision a digital future where youth are integral to policymaking. Gen Z, as the first digitally native generation, brings unique perspectives to the table, making the digital transition an opportunity for intergenerational dialogue. ESN Albania is proud to contribute to shaping a future that reflects the voices and values of young people. Let’s create future leaders who will elevate humanity to the digital realm, united and bold.
